Congenital Heart Disease in Korean Children
Lee Heung-Jae

Abstract
A total of 386 children under 15 years of age with various types of heart diseases was observed at the Department of Pediatrics, Hanyang University Hospital during a period of 8 years from July, 1975 to July, 1983, and the types of cardiac anomalies were confirmed by cardiac catheterization and cardiac angiography.
These cases were analyzed statistically according to the types of diseases observed.
The summary of the observation made is as follows:
1. Among the heart diseases in children observed, the congenital heart disease represented 96.9% and rheumatic heart disease represented 3.1%.
2. No significant difference was observed in the distribution of sex. Out of 386 cases, 197 were males (51%) and 189 females (49%).
3. As studied by cardiac catheterization and cardiac angiography, the highest age incidence was observed in the children under the age of 2 years. And 58.8% of the children observed was under the age of 6 years.
4. The incidence of each individual type of congenital cardiac anomalies was 33.7% for isolated ventricular septal defect (VSD), 16.6% for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), 14.2% for tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) , 8.5% for secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) , and 3.7% for heterotaxia in the order of frequency.
5. The incidence of ventricular septal defect (VSD) alone or with any other associated anomalies was 67.7% of all the congenital cardiac anomalies observed : the isolated VSD
